Platter & Plinth is written by Stephen V., a vinyl enthusiast — someone genuinely into turntables and the gear that hangs off them. He is not an audio engineer and does not run a listening lab: where a deck has not been handled, the site says so, and picks are reasoned from published specifications rather than a testing claim it cannot back.That framing matters, because it’s the honest one: no lab coat, no test rooms, no claim to have personally listened to forty decks.
What we bring instead is a method, and we hold ourselves to it in public. We read the manufacturer’s manual and spec sheet, compile the figures that actually decide how a deck performs — drive type, cartridge, tracking force, gain, wow & flutter — do the arithmetic where it helps (like matching a cartridge’s output to a preamp’s gain), and cite the source for every claim. Where a maker doesn’t publish a number, we say “not published” rather than guessing.

- Neutral about honesty. If a cheaper option is the better buy, that’s our pick — the commission never decides it.
