What Is a Built-in Phono Preamp?

It is the small circuit that decides whether your turntable can plug into anything at all — and there is a good chance you already own three of them without knowing.

A phono preamp is not an optional accessory. Every vinyl system contains one somewhere, because a turntable physically cannot drive an ordinary input without it. The only question is which box yours is inside— and the most common answer, for anyone who bought a turntable in the last decade, is “the turntable”.

Why the circuit has to exist

Two problems, both created at the moment a record is cut.

The signal is tiny.A cartridge generates its output from a magnet moving a fraction of a millimeter inside a coil. The result is measured in millivolts — thousandths of a volt. A phone or CD player outputs several hundred millivolts. That is roughly a hundredfold gap.

The tone is deliberately wrong. Cutting an unmodified signal into vinyl would give bass grooves so wide they cut into their neighbors and treble so quiet it vanished under surface noise. So the cutting engineer applies the RIAA curve: bass reduced, treble boosted. Playback has to apply the exact inverse.

A phono preamp does both jobs. That is why plugging a turntable into an aux input without one produces sound that is not just quiet but thin and tinny — you are hearing the RIAA curve uncorrected. The arithmetic behind the gain figures is in gain and impedance explained.

How to find yours

Check these four places, in order. You may well find more than one, which is fine as long as only one is switched into the chain.

1. The turntable

Look at the back panel for a small switch marked PHONO / LINE, or sometimes PRE-AMP ON / OFF. That switch is the giveaway. If the manual mentions a “built-in preamp”, “phono equalizer” or “line output”, you have one.

Most decks under about $400 include one — the Audio-Technica AT-LP60X and AT-LP120XUSB, the Fluance RT81, and most Sony and Victrola models. Most decks above that price deliberately omit it: the Fluance RT82 and Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO both have none, which is a design decision rather than an omission.

2. The amplifier or receiver

Look for an input labeled PHONO— usually with a small screw terminal marked GND or GROUND next to it. That ground post is the tell: no other input needs one.

Most amplifiers built before about 1990 have a phono input. Many modern AV receivers dropped it, which is why dedicated stereo receivers remain popular with vinyl listeners — see amplifiers for a turntable.

3. The powered speakers

Some powered speakers include a phono stage and a ground post. The Kanto YU6 and Klipsch The Fives do; the popular Edifier R1280T does not— a distinction that catches people out constantly, and one we cover in our R1280T review.

4. Nowhere

If none of the above applies, you need a separate box. That is normal and they are inexpensive — see phono preamps under $100.

The one rule: exactly one, ever

Running two phono stages in series is the most common setup error in vinyl. The signal gets amplified and RIAA-equalized twice, and the result is distorted, harsh and painfully loud.

It happens when someone connects a turntable with its internal preamp switched on into an amplifier’s PHONO input. The fix is a switch, not a purchase:

  • Into powered speakers or an aux/line input: turntable set to LINE (internal preamp on).
  • Into an amplifier’s PHONO input: turntable set to PHONO (internal preamp bypassed).
  • Into a separate phono stage:turntable set to PHONO, and the stage’s output goes to a lineinput — never another phono input.

The opposite error — no stage anywhere — gives the faint, tinny sound described above. Both symptoms are in turntable troubleshooting.

Is the built-in one any good?

It is adequate, and on a budget deck it is genuinely fine. But it fights a harder battle than a separate box does, for a structural reason: it is a very-low-noise amplifier sitting inches from a spinning motor and a mains transformer, sharing a chassis and often a power supply with both, while handling a signal of a few thousandths of a volt.

A separate stage in its own shielded case with its own supply starts from an easier position before either has been engineered. That is why every deck above roughly $500 leaves the circuit out.

The practical test: switch your turntable to PHONO, run it into a separate stage, and listen to the background between tracks with the volume up. If the noise floor drops and the bass tightens, the upgrade earned its money. If nothing changes, your built-in stage was fine and the money is better spent on speakers.

When to bypass it

  • You bought a separate phono stage.Obviously — switch to PHONO or you will have two in series.
  • Your amplifier has a phono input.Try both and keep whichever sounds quieter; a good amplifier’s stage usually beats a budget turntable’s.
  • You upgraded to a cartridge with unusual output.A fixed-gain built-in stage cannot be matched to it. A stage with switchable gain can — see phono preamps under $200.
  • You hear hum you cannot trace. Sometimes the internal stage is picking up the motor. Bypassing it is a legitimate diagnostic step.

And when not to: if you have nothing to replace it with. A bypassed built-in preamp with no external stage produces the faint, thin sound of no preamp at all.
