Do You Need an Amp for a Turntable?

Maybe — it depends entirely on your speakers. Here are the three jobs every vinyl setup has to cover, and how to tell which ones you still need.

The honest answer is: it depends on your speakers. To turn a spinning record into sound, three jobs have to happen somewhere between the deck and your ears. Once you know which of the three you already have covered, the answer to “do I need an amp?” is obvious.

The three jobs in every vinyl setup

  1. The phono preampboosts the cartridge’s tiny signal and applies RIAA equalization. (See do I need a phono preamp?)
  2. The amplifier takes that line-level signal and provides the power to physically move the speaker drivers.
  3. The speakers convert that power into sound.

Every working setup covers all three. The difference between systems is just how many boxes those jobs are split across.

Powered speakers: no separate amp needed

Powered (active) speakers have the amplifier built in. So if you use powered speakers, you do notneed a separate amp — job two is handled inside the speaker. A turntable with its own phono preamp plugs straight into them and you have a complete system. This is the route we recommend for most people: fewer boxes, less cost, less to get wrong. Some powered speakers (the Kanto YU6, Klipsch The Fives) even build the phono preamp in, covering jobs one and two at once.

Passive speakers: yes, you need an amp

Passive speakers have no amplifier of their own.They need a separate amp or receiver to drive them — that’s job two — plus a phono preamp for job one (unless the amp has a PHONO input, which covers both). This is the traditional hi-fi approach, and it can sound superb and scale higher than powered speakers. But it’s more components, more cables, and more money for a first system. Passive speakers like the Micca MB42Xare excellent value — if you already have or want an amp.

So, do you need an amp?

  • Using powered speakers?No separate amp needed. Just confirm a phono preamp is in the chain (the deck’s, or the speakers’).
  • Using passive speakers?Yes — you need an amplifier or receiver, plus a phono preamp somewhere (an amp with a PHONO input covers both).
  • Not sure and starting fresh?Buy powered speakers. It’s the cheapest, simplest way to a good-sounding system.

Do I need an amplifier for a turntable?

Do powered speakers replace both the amp and the receiver?

They replace the amplifier. If your turntable has a built-in phono preamp too, then powered speakers plus the deck are a complete system — no separate amp or receiver needed. Some powered speakers even include the phono preamp.
